When we first saw the house, it looked like this:
Not really my style. And I want this kitchen to be a-ma-zing. I liked my last one just fine, but I want this one to be a show-stopper. Plus, I spend at least half of my day in the kitchen and want it to work really, really well.
As of today, the kitchen looks like this:
It's basically just an empty room.
Okay, so my issue is that there are 3 windows and 5 doorways into this room. That's right... 5 doors. This leaves me a stretch of counter space about.. oh.. a foot long!
So, we're closing up one of the doorways, but it still doesn't give me quite enough counter space.
Okay. The point. You see that window in the reno-progress picture? How do you feel about a counter going straight across the space? It could possibly be a sink, or maybe just counter space. Do you hate dropped window wells?
Here's a photo I found searching ye olde internet for solutions.
Okay, let's be clear. I'm not planning to put those curtains, or that sink, in my kitchen, but you can see they had the same problem as me.
Here's another:
Much more my style, although the window is different.
So, what do you think? Do I just say 'damn them all!' and put a counter right across the old low window, or do I drop the counter and make a 'seat' or something for that space? (See picture #2 above, where the original owners had lowered the counter and put a microwave in the space.
Thanking you, of designer-ly readers of mine!
sink across window! Doooooo it!
ReplyDeleteI vote for a sink in front of the window. It would be beautiful, I'd say.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most wonderful home ever. And Chris is a demo expert; I can't believe how fast he works.
sooo, I think you should make a massive island (eg Barry's) with the sink in it. Then just do a dropped window well with just counter, you'll get lots of usable counter space that way and have a decent stretch up against that wall.
ReplyDeleteI say sink in front of the window...we had it like that growing up and you could look out the window and see what was going on as we washed gooseberries. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has window wells in both my kitchen windows, I gotta say I don't love them. They look ugly from the outside, and crap always falls down into them. That said, I don't think I could trade my counter space. A sink in front of the window is a kitchen essential, especially with two crazy boys running around in your garden. I'd vote window, but you'll need to think about how to make it look nice from the porch.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has found kitchens to be problematic and messy I say put a hot tub in the centre of the room. It's very in keeping with 2nd empire styling!!
ReplyDeleteEat out a lot.
