The 2-sister road trip of 2010 was a great success. 2 days with Uncle David and Auntie Mary at their ridiculously beautiful home near Port Burwell and a long tour yesterday that ended with us staying in Guelph and eating at a gastropub that sources local foods. Yay! We drove from David's house to Guelph using the sun as guidance and with the rule that no major roads allowed. We went through Woodstock, Tavistock, Shakespear, Elmira, Elora and probably a few more.
Our first night at David's was auction night. (He's a regular). We got some treasures and had a great time people watching. Elgin County is an amazing crossroads of Amish, Mennonite and other cultures. People came to the auction in horse carriages, people! It was so great. Had Sarah been driving The Lady Truck, she surely would have driven off the road upon seeing the round corn cribs. We slowed traffic (if there had been any) looking to see if houses had power lines to them. Old timey fun!
Mary is the ultimate hostess and prepared delicious and intricate meals for us while we lounged around the table. Later, we sat by the wood stove and told stories that caused me to fall onto the floor laughing.
Chris seemed to do quite well on his solo-weekend. He even took the boys to Ottawa overnight Saturday to visit with the cousins. Brave! Other than a slightly wild look around the eyes, he seems to have fared pretty well. The boys are reluctantly settling down tonight after a long, fun weekend.
I'd like to say that Sarah and I could manage an escape like this every month, but that would never happen, so we've decided to aim for a seasonal retreat plan. I could happen!
I took many, many photos: Far too many to share, so here are some highlights:
David's perfect house.
David's tobacco kilns. Although, they call them 'kills' down there... not sure why. Nobody grows it anymore, but the 'kills' are everywhere. It's soybean and corn country now.
Sarah and David chat in the soybean field.
The kilns on a foggy Friday morn.
Our auction spoils. We fill up the back of a truck, nooo problem. Of course, David's stuff was about half that space. He's an auction maniac.
Still foggy at sunset time.
We reluctantly depart this haven.
This picture of a Mennonite girl on a cell phone makes me laugh and laugh.
Exploring the Elora gorge. It was gorge-ous.
Sarah's idea of a funny photo. (This one's for you Martina).
And more and more!
Soybeans
Okay. Holiday over. School tomorrow! Thanks Nay for being a great traveling partner. The Lady Truck misses you.
I miss you already! Ok, rest up tonight because tomorrow we plan our Winter trip!! Woot woooot! Tell lady-truck I miss her too!
