Chris and I both spent time last week with a scraper, a utility knife and a bottle of watered down wallpaper-glue remover. And now the maid's room has gone from newspaper adorned to blank. We saved an amazing amount of the clippings and I'm really happy about it. I don't know exactly what I'll do with them, but knowing they were put there in the 1880's by a creative servant trying to beautify her personal space makes the pictures extra special to me.
It was a tricky job. Imagine trying to peel wet tissue paper off a wall. That describes their fragility. Now the room can be de-plastered and insulated. Oh, and maybe have wiring and heat added too.
Progress!
Uncle Phil, who worked like a dog all weekend, drove his broken self home yesterday afternoon. He's advanced our work considerably and, as usual, was a joy to have back in the fold of his alterna-family. Miss you, friend!
And thanks!
I know the house well...it was owned til now by my husband's relatives. It's interesting to see the work that you are doing. It's a beautiful old house...I always imagined myself living in it...I hope you have an "open house" when it's done, so we can all see it one more time.
