Retrospective

I'm having one of those weird days where I'm trying to compute all that's happened in the last year. The picture above is from our last days in Montana, which is just a few weeks shy of a year ago. The boys are clearly younger, but not hugely different than today.

Today was spring-ish and beautiful and warm and I walked around the Po-Ho with Sam for a while this morning. The weather didn't help my befuddlement.

It's really not that long since we drove away from our Ottawa house but, in some ways, that seems longer ago than the day this picture was taken. We really moved! And bought a crazy, beautiful, high-needs house in a wee town! What?!

These days Charley is singing songs that I didn't teach him and Sam is chatting up strangers in the library, and I think "who am I and who are these kids?". Within the puzzled moments I'm grateful for how smoothly the fall has gone. (So far.)

I think the ease of our transition is part of the problem. We've all slid into our new worlds quite easily. Sometimes I think "remember when I lived in Ottawa? For half my life?". Or "remember when Uncle Phil was living with us? Just last Christmas!?". Or even, "remember when Chris was gone all summer to Africa?". It's a weird feeling.

Chris is away on a top-secret sleuth mission in the west and I'm just sitting in Po-Ho, wondering where the time went. Hope you're all well, wherever you are.
